The Labuan ro-ro ferry, transporting vehicles and passengers from the island to the mainland of Sabah, Menumbok, is in bad shape, thus there is a need for an additional ferry.

Due to the poor condition of the main ferry of Wawasan Perdana, which was now being pulled by another ferry, the Warisan Perdana, to speed up the journey, travelers from Labuan to Menumbok and vice-versa had been hoping for an improvement in services.

The contract had been monopolised, and we are in the opinion that the service must be tendered out for more capable entities to take part for a healthy competition.

We fully agree with the Minister of Transport, Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat’s statement that there should be no monopoly in providing service to the people.

There was numerous complaints from regular travelers on the poor condition of the ro-ro ferry, where passengers and their vehicles had been stuck for almost three hours in the ferry and there were times travellers only reached Labuan at midnight.

The ro-ro ferry on normal days provides two trips a day from Labuan to Menumbok and two trips from Menumbok to Labuan. The schedule from Labuan is 7.30am and 1.30pm while from Menumbok it is at 10.30am and 4.30pm.

During holidays or festive seasons the ferry services will have five to six trips a day, but with only two ferries – Wawasan Perdana and Warisan Perdana.

Labuan Ferry Corporation is the sole ferry operator transporting vehicles and passengers from Labuan to Menumbok and vice versa.
